Newton’s Playground (6 th)
The implementation of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) necessitates several changes to our existing scope and sequence. As a result, sixth grade explores a new unit on “ Energy, Forces and Motion.” The students work in stations that focus on fundamental physics concepts. Topics to be explored include energy, electromagnetism, gravity, inertia and Newton’s Laws of Motion, hence the name, “Newton’s Playground.” The equipment and materials become a permanent part of Brookside’s inventory and can be used year after year. Science instruction should not only be educational, but also enjoyable and engaging. One very popular model of instruction embodies this notion, the “5 E’s” which are “Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate.” This grant proposes to help cover all the E’s.
