FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®)
The FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) introduces young people in grades 6-8 to the fun and excitement of science and technology while building self-confidence, knowledge and valuable career and life skills. Students are immersed in real-world science and technology challenges. Teams design their own solution to a current scientific question or problem and build autonomous LEGO® robots that perform a series of missions based on an annual theme.
Brookside School's debut Robotics team of ten 6th graders built and programmed several robots to navigate various missions and tasks as part of the First Lego League's Trash Trek challenge, which culminated in competing in a local tournament in late November. As part of this challenge, students designed and built a robot which could complete various missions based on the Trash Trek game board and a project which sought to improve a local trash problem. The Brookside club decided to help reduce trash by designing a biodegradable chip bag.The team worked tirelessly for weeks prior to the competition. Highlights of this project included a chip bag collection in our school cafeteria, polling classmates using a Google form, and speaking with a packaging expert.
Brookside students made an impression on the judges at the competition, garnering complements on their preparation and team work. Ultimately, the team earned a 2ndplace award and trophy for their project and performed better than about half of the 26 veteran teams participating in the robot game. The students who participated were quite an impressive crew and are very much looking forward to next year's challenge!
